html for kids teacher
Hi! I'm Cindy Cullen, a single, homeschool Mom of 3. I am also a professional web developer.

I quit my job as a computer application programmer for GE in 1995 to stay home with my children. It was one of the best decisions I've ever made. By staying home with my kids, I got to watch their first steps, hear their first words, and be there to kiss their boo-boos when they fell. I got to watch those little light bulbs go off in their eyes when they witnessed their first sunrise, their first science experiment, and the first time they truly understood what they were reading.

I remember my son, Matthew, asking me, "When did the letters on the page turn into words?" He said, "It's just like magic, Mommy!" I also remember listening to my younger son, Mason, learn to say his ABC's and the letter 'L' tripping up his tongue, making the 'MNO' practically disapper. And I remember how my daughter, Mallory, taught me that there are other ways to learn besides books. I still enjoy hearing the sounds of them learning to sing and play various instruments. As I write this, I hear the distant echoes of a yukele that Matthew is getting really good at playing. I think I've learned much more from them than they will EVER learn from me. These are all things I would have missed had I kept working outside the home.

When my boys were 10 and 12, they and some of their friends wanted to learn to build their own web pages. So, I created an online course to help them learn the programming language with which web pages are created - HTML. HTML is short for HyperText Markup Language. It's used so that your web browser can deliver the web page in a readable and appealing format no matter which computer browser you are using. Whether you are using a Mac or Windows or even Linux, a web page should be accessible by all. Regardless of whether you are using Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, or Google Chrome, you should be able to see all the web pages found on the internet. But, only if the web developer used good HTML code as well as other programming techniques.

Word about the class spread and I ended up teaching as many, or more, homeschool parents as I did children. I found that many parents were helping to maintain their church or homeschool group website and needed to learn more about HTML. I've been teaching that online course in a Yahoo Group off and on every since.

While I've been home with my children, I've taught computer and programming classes at the local Christian High School, for a nearby Community College, and to pre-teens in our homeschool co-op. I also started my own web hosting and design business. I am passionate about computers, programming and teaching others.

In early 2008, as a single Mom, I had to go back to work outside the home as a full time web developer so that I could make ends meet. Again, I found that I absolutely loved my career but I really missed being home with my children. Eventhough they were old enough to take care of themselves and thrive on their own, I began looking for ways to stay home again.

As I learned more about the web development business on the job, I started taking more and more free-lance web development jobs on the side and eventually built my home business up enough to replace my full time salary.

Last December, I quit my full time job again, to stay home with my children.

I know how it feels to want to be home with your children and not be able because of a financial situation. I also know, as a homeschool Mom, how hard it can be to find the right teacher or tutor for subjects that you don't feel qualified to teach your children yourself.

I have found that by teaching HTML and other technical classes I can help both the parent and the homeschooled student. It's a very rewarding and fulfilling project for me.

Why am I doing this?

Last month, I made more money from home than I used to make in 3 months in my full time job.

My business is booming and I have more work than I can do alone. That's a good problem to have, but it's still a problem. I needed HELP!

I've hired several other programmers (many of them home school students) to help me out and I need to train some of them so that they can get up to speed on everything I need them to do. While I'm training them, I thought I might invite others along for the ride. So, after this HTML class, I plan to teach more advanced classes. I wanted to start with the basics to make sure that we are all on the same page before I get into the more advanced classes.

I am expanding my business to include more online marketing and more search engine optimization. As I market more, the demand for my services increases as well. I need better qualified designers, marketers and programmers to help me meet that demand.

Since I've been programming for more than 25 years, I have the experience that many business owners are looking for to help them with their online needs. This helps me get many jobs that younger, less experienced free-lancers can't get. To have more time to market my business, I need more help with the designing, coding and programming. As I train my contractors, some of them will be able to help me more so that I will have more time to market and train more advanced subjects. The more contractors I train, the more time I will have to train even more, and market my business even better.

By combining my passion for web development, my passion for teaching, and my loyalty to the homeschool community, I intend to create a thriving online community of web developers that have been personally trained by me. I feel that it is a win/win situation. I win as my business grows. My contractors win by making more money and learning new skills. My customers win by getting better quality service quicker than they would if it were just me working by myself. And now YOU win by learning a new skill!

The better qualified web developers I can get working on the websites, the more satisfied customers we can serve. If I train the contractors myself, then my customers can expect the same quality work on their websites that they currently get from me. And the next time you hear about someone that needs a website and they don't want to do the work themselves, maybe you can help them out.

I am in the process of moving from being self-employed to a business owner. It's a huge step for me. I like to have control over the work and many times I could do it faster and better (at least in my mind) than some of the contractors that I've hired. But, I'm beginning to see that the only way to serve more people is to get good quality help. To guarantee that my customers get the same quality work, I want to make sure that my contractors know what I expect and know how to do exactly what I expect from them.

These are skills you and your children can use right away!

The web development business has not been hurt by this poor economy nearly as much as other industries. I was surprised at how many people and businesses are investing in their websites in such a time as this. I suppose that they are putting more money into their marketing campaigns to bring in more business. They are also trying to save money by hiring free-lance programmers instead of high-end marketing, advertising or web development firms. They are even willing to spend some of their own time and energy on building their own website to reduce the costs. And they expect more value for their money.

This is why I want to help others learn HTML. I know that the more I help others, the better our entire economy will be. One of the things I can do to help our economy is to help others find work. I can also help by showing small business owners how to build and maintain their own websites. And if they don't have the time to work on their own site, then I want to provide them good, quality, web development services to help their businesses thrive. It truly is a win/win situation.

This will not be for everyone!

As I said earlier, I've taught many, many people HTML. Some of my students loved it and begged for more classes. Others got frustrated right away and quit before they even got started. Some people just don't like this kind of work. Those that enjoy and stick with it often find it thoroughly fulfilling and rewarding.

Many of my students wanted to learn HTML to make their eBay listings look better. Some of them were starting their own home businesses and many just wanted to learn so that they could teach their children. Other students wanted to learn HTML to make their own personal web pages to show friends and family. And others wanted to start their own web design businesses.

Some of my students have been as young as 8 and some have been grandmas and grandpas that are trying to make a little extra money during retirement. The age or reason for learning this material doesn't seem to matter. Some do well and some don't.

I suppose it's like most any other subject. But with HTML, my students seem to either REALLY love it or REALLY hate it. It's usually very early in the class that they can tell which side of the love/hate fence they are going to fall. Either way, they always win by taking the class. Why? Because if they love it, they can learn more. If they hate it, they've found a group of people that are more than willing to help them out with their web pages by providing quality service at reasonable prices.

If I'm not a homeschool student or parent, can I still attend the class?

The HTML class is not limited to homeschool students and their parents. Anyone may attend assuming you register before the class size limit is reached. There are no pre-requisites for the HTML class.

Technology has advanced significantly since I started teaching the classes. Yahoo groups get harder and harder to work with for the classes. Since so many people are visual learners, I've decided to start teaching the classes as free, 90-minute, live online seminars (webinar) instead of the email type classes. I think it will make it easier for you to ask questions and it will give you better access to me for help. It will be almost as if we are in the same room as I walk you step by step through the instructions.

This new, more interactive format will allow me to help you better so that hopefully, you can learn the material quicker and easier than ever before. I want to help you as much as possible. You can access the class from the comfort of your own home. You can even come to class in your pajamas!
